Strengthening preventive measures against the effects of increasingly frequent extreme weather events and ensuring producers' access to insurance schemes are two of the key points that will feature in the final recommendations of the EU high-level group on wine. The group met on Friday in Brussels for the third round of talks before adopting the text that will contribute to reflections on the future Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) post-2027.
At the heart of the meeting was the draft recommendations, which, according to a spokesperson for the EU executive, were met with "broad approval" from representatives of member states.
The focus is on policy measures to manage the current and future productive potential of the sector, "taking into account a structural decline in wine demand" in Europe, which also affects Italy.
Member states also emphasized the importance of reinforcing preventive measures, adaptation strategies, and producers' access to insurance schemes in response to increasingly frequent extreme weather events, "including better use of measures within national support programs already available to the sector." The draft recommendations will be revised in the coming days, with the goal of approving the text and presenting it to industry representatives at the final meeting scheduled for December 16.
